Making cities more intelligible through human-centric urban design and spatial analytics.
The Intelligible City Lab at The University of Hong Kong is based in the Faculty of Architecture, Department of Urban Planning and Design. Led by Prof. Chen Feng, our research goal is to make cities more intelligible—helping people better understand, navigate, and interact with urban environments.
Our research focuses on four key areas: Space Syntax & Urban Design, examining how spatial configurations shape movement and social interactions; Wayfinding & Spatial Cognition, studying how people navigate complex urban environments; City Information Modeling (CIM), developing digital frameworks for urban analysis; and Sustainable Urban Systems, creating resilient solutions for future cities. Through rigorous research and applied design, we aim to develop insights that foster community interactions, enhance urban livability, and improve public health outcomes.
